The New York Giants will have the 47th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and one of the names they could draft is defensive tackle Johnny Newton from the Illinois Fighting Illini. Some NFL Mock Drafts had this player going in the first round of the 2024 NFL Mock Draft.
Not a lot of talented defensive players went in the first round as a lot of offensive players went in the first round. With the New York Giants drafting wide receiver Malik Nabers sixth overall from LSU in the first round, they are going to transition to potentially the defensive side of the football on day two of the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Giants will need to address the linebacker, cornerback, and safety position. They could also use some help for Dexter Lawrence up front and they could also draft another edge rusher to help out Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns to provide depth for this football team. It will be interesting to see what the New York Giants decide to draft on day two.
Sporting News Mock Draft Has the New York Giants Drafting Johnny Newton In the Second Round of the 2024 NFL Draft
In a Mock Draft by Vinnie Iyer from Sporting News, he has the New York Giants drafting Johhny Newton with the 47th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. That is their only second-round selection after they traded the 39th overall pick to the Carolina Panthers for Brian Burns.
One of the reasons why the Giants would take Newton 47th overall is because they need help at defensive tackle alongside Dexter Lawrence. Iyer’s reasoning for this selection is as follows:
“The Giants need to add some more power to their defensive front under new coordinator Shane Bowen, who coached Jeffery Simmons in Tennessee.”
Newton is 6’2″ and weighs 304 lbs. Last season with the Illinois Fighting Illini, he had 52 total tackles and 7.5 sacks last season with Illinois. Newton also forced one fumble, recovered one fumble, and had two pass deflections.
That fact that he is still on the board in the second round is mind-boggling. A defensive tackle having 7.5 sacks in one college football season is quite impressive and he can also tackle well. The New York Giants drafting defensive tackle Johnny Newton in the second round would be another home run talent found by general manager Joe Schoen because they need to find the best football player available.
