The New York Giants held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to introduce outside linebacker Brian Burns to the team. Burns was acquired in a trade from the Carolina Panthers. He also signed a five-year deal worth $150 million and $87.5 million of it will be guaranteed. This is going to help bolster the Giants’ defense moving forward.
Some of the other building blocks on this defense moving forward other than Brian Burns are Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Micah McFadden, Bobby Okereke, and Deonte Banks. Burns spoke to the media via Zoom on Wednesday and he talked about some of the Giants’ defensive personnel by saying:
“New York has a ton of young pieces. They’ve got dogs on the inside, a dog at LB.”
They will need to add some more pieces on the defensive side of the football in the offseason. The New York Giants could use some more help at cornerback and defensive tackle. General manager Joe Schoen will address that either in free agency or through the NFL Draft.
Shane Bowen is the new defensive coordinator this season after Wink Martindale was let go this offseason. Brian Burns is only 25 years old and recorded 50 tackles, eight sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two pass deflections last season with the Carolina Panthers. He was selected 16th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft by Carolina out of Florida State.
New York Giants Will Look To Replicate Old Ways With Pass Rush With Brian Burns
In the past, the Giants have been wrecking the passer with guys like Lawrence Taylor, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, and Jason Pierre-Paul. It is a brand new day of that for New York with Dexter Lawrence, Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. They will look to add for that position potentially.
This is an interesting career stats for Burns:

1st: 8
2nd: 16
3rd: 19
4th: 3 #NYGiants— WBG84 (@WBG84) March 14, 2024
This is a good thing for the Giants because he can help get the defense off the field on third down. Burns also added to reporters about his game by saying:
“I’m relentless. They’re getting a playmaker.”

The Giants’ defense hopes to be relentless for the next several seasons. A lot of fans are happy with the acquisition of Burns. One of the next things that they are going to have to figure out this offseason is the quarterback position.
Even with a great defense, New York needs a respectable offense to not make the defense tired. They are looking to move off of quarterback Daniel Jones and maybe use the sixth overall pick or a trade-up in the 2024 NFL Draft on a quarterback.
