The New York Giants have a lot of uncertainty this offseason. Right now, they hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, depending on what the Chicago Bears want to do, New York could try to trade up for the top overall pick. Now, one national NFL analyst believes the Giants are the favorites to do so.
Cam Marino Thinks New York Giants Trade Up
Cam Marino of NFL Draft Buzz posted this tweet regarding the New York Giants. He discusses the idea of the Giants being the team to watch if the Bears are willing to trade their top pick. Marino believes they are a more realistic option and that the Giants are serious about drafting the QB of the future.
“IDK the legitimacy of Chicago wanting out of the first pick, but the team I’m watching for a potential big move up to 1 is the Giants, not the Falcons.
Giants have been monitoring the move-up-market since the middle of January. I believe they want a QB of the future.” -Cam Marino
Giants’ Quarterback Uncertainty
It is no secret that the Giants have some uncertainty at the quarterback position. Before the end of the 2023 season, rookie QB Tommy DeVito was benched in favor of veteran QB Tyrod Taylor. On top of this, veteran QB Daniel Jones missed the majority of the 2023 season due to multiple injuries. As a result, the Giants may consider buying Jones out of his contract following the 2024 NFL season.
Cost to Move Up
The cost to move up to the top overall pick will likely be very high. Chicago was in a similar spot last year when they agreed to trade their pick to the Carolina Panthers. They received a large haul for said pick.
Most people believe the Bears could get an even bigger haul for the top pick this year. Former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum touched on this topic recently. He believes it would take four draft picks plus DE Kayvon Thibodeaux. One of those picks would be the Giants’ first round draft pick next season.
While it is unlikely to go down exactly as Tannenbaum proposed, the Giants can expect to have to give up a lot of capital to secure this draft pick. Plus, the Giants have to hope that the Bears are even open to trading this pick in the first place. However, given recent events with QB Justin Fields, New York should not count on this.
