The New York Giants have been scouting Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. before the 2024 NFL Draft. The NFL Draft is less than three weeks away. New York will own the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
They will have a lot of options with this selection. It is possible that six quarterbacks may be selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The others would be Caleb Wiliams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, J.J. McCarthy, and Bo Nix.
Penix Jr. is talented, but injuries have been a concern throughout his collegiate career. He caught the eye of many people during college football season. Washington made it to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game before losing to the Michigan Wolverines.
He completed 65.4% of his passes for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last season with the Huskies. He can throw it deep. Some teams are willing to draft him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft and there could be some teams that could possibly trade up for him.
Michael Penix Jr. slipping to the second round may not happen with the way some of these teams are desperate for a quarterback. The first three picks of the 2024 NFL Draft may very well be quarterbacks and then someone may jump the Giants to move ahead of them to get a quarterback. This is going to be a very wild NFL Draft.
The New York Giants Should Not Reach For Quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
It would be a massive reach in the 2024 NFL Draft if the Giants selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the sixth overall pick. There would be a lot of negative reactions to that selection. Yes, the Giants do have quarterback issues with Daniel Jones and Drew Lock isn’t also the answer, but reaching for someone isn’t the answer either.
Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, or Marvin Harrison Jr. will certainly be available by the time New York picks. They are more of a surefire bet to hit because they all have the talent to be a top wide receiver rather than taking an injury-prone quarterback.
Harrison Jr. is the best wide receiver prospect in quite some time. Nabers comes from LSU, who always hit at the wide receiver position. Michael Penix Jr. was also teammates with Rome Odunze. It would potentially be Groundhog Day all over again for the franchise if they reached for a quarterback as they did with Daniel Jones in 2019. General manager Joe Schoen needs to do what is best in building this football team.
