Tom Brady’s dad didn’t hold back in sharing his thoughts why Bill Belichick failed to replicate the success he had with the legendary quarterback in his last few years with the New England Patriots.
Brady Sr. pointed out that Belichick’s “ego” is what has led to his fall in New England, noting that the moment Belichick let his son walk away, it marked the beginning of the end of his tenure with the Patriots.
Tom Brady Sr. Has Harsh Bill Belichick Assessment
In an interview with Cristopher Gasper of The Boston Globe, Brady Sr. highlighted how Belichick’s “horrible” interpersonal skills didn’t do him any favor in his bid to prove that he can thrive without Tom.
Brady Sr. also looked back at the moments when Belichick shared his desire to win without TB12, only to fail in the end. For the elder Brady, that “ego” in the first place caused Belichick’s fall from grace.
Had Belichick took care of his partnership with Brady, things could have been different for the Patriots.
“How many times has he said — back in ‘15 or ‘16 — that he wanted to win without Tommy? When he went without Tommy, he didn’t know what he was losing. You’re losing more than just a quarterback,” Brady Sr. said.
“Ego sometimes gets in the way of things. I think it did with Bill. Now, he’s in a situation where he’s gotten crucified for the last few years by everybody and a lot of luster has come off his rose.”
For what it’s worth, it’s hard to argue with what Tom Brady Sr. just said. After all, Belichick really struggled since Tom left him in 2020.
Bill Belichick, New England Patriots’ Fall in Post-Tom Brady Era
Tom Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after his New England Patriots departure and went on to win his seventh Super Bowl ring in the very same season.
On the other hand, the Patriots made the playoffs just once from 2020 to 2023, and that’s in 2021 when they didn’t even win and lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.
During that span, Belichick’s Patriots tallied a 29-38 win-loss record. The ugliest of course came in the most recent campaign when they finished with a 4-13 record.
With Belichick gone from the Patriots and still jobless, it remains to be seen if the legendary tactician will ever be able to get a chance to prove that he can win without Brady.
