It’s clear that the New England Patriots are eager to get back on track with the right QB, and they hope the 2024 NFL Draft will provide them with the right QB that they can build around.
It’s fortunate for the Patriots that they have the opportunity to get a star QB through the 2024 NFL Draft as it features one of the deepest pools of QB talent in recent memory. Since they have the third pick in this year’s draft, it would be tough for them to whiff on selecting a young QB who can transform the team.
However, there is still a very small segment of fans who believe that Mac Jones only needs one more opportunity under coach Jerod Mayo before the team officially gives up on him. One New England Patriots writer argued why now is the best time for the Pats to select a new QB.
Building on first-round talent will help the New England Patriots thrive
NESN’s Tim Crowley wrote about the clear need for the Patriots to select a QB with their first-round pick in the draft. He identified multiple reasons why the Pats should take a QB early, but his most compelling argument is how the current AFC powerhouses have been built:
In order to get back to their winning ways, the Patriots have to find a way to stack up against the elite competition of the AFC. As a whole, the top dogs of the conference are all experiencing the benefits of investing in a first-round quarterback to open a competitive window.
In the AFC alone, almost every elite teams have a fantastic QB leading the charge. The Kansas City Chiefs picked Patrick Mahomes with the tenth pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Josh Allen was selected seventh overall in 2018 by the Buffalo Bills, while the Baltimore Ravens picked up Lamar Jackson with the 32nd pick. Tua Taovailoa was fifth in the 2020 NFL Draft, while Justin Herbert immediately followed at sixth.
With the way the league has been going, it would make sense for the Patriots to try their luck with the 2024 class as it has one of the most elite QB groups in recent memory. Even if they don’t get a sniff of Caleb Williams, there are plenty of terrific signal-callers who can transform the team into a competitive one in the AFC.
