The New England Patriots are one of the most interesting teams to watch out for in the upcoming NFL Draft. Armed with the third overall pick in the rookie selection, they could take one of the Top 3 QBs in the class. Nonetheless, they also have the option of drafting another talent and addressing their quarterback situation in free agency instead.
With the no. 3 pick, the Patriots would be getting the QB that both the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders–picking first and second, respectively–would pass on. That puts them in quite the tricky situation since there’s still Ohio State Buckeyes wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., who is widely considered to be one of the best talents in the class.
So, will the Patriots take a QB that they need or add a premium, high-ceiling talent for a position that is really not their priority.
New England Patriots Take a QB in 2024 Draft
No matter how alluring Harrison may be to the Patriots, ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates predicts that the New England franchise will take a QB instead.
The veteran reporter expects Caleb Williams to go no. 1 to the Bears and Jayden Daniels at no. 2 to the Commanders. That leaves the Patriots selecting UNC Tar Heels signal-caller Drake Maye, whom Yates believes is a nice fit for the new Jerod Mayo-led team.
“The 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback is still 21 years old and has the prototypical build for an NFL passer. Maye is a strike-thrower when targeting the middle of the field, but he also shows nifty pocket agility to extend plays and has 16 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons,” Yates wrote to explain the Maye pick for the Patriots.
“As the Patriots embark on a new era under Jerod Mayo, they could build the new offense around Maye. New England finished last season 30th in yards per attempt (6.1) and 31st in Total QBR (31.6).
Maye is certainly an intriguing prospect. During his three years in North Carolina, he tallied a total of 8018 yards and 63 touchdowns against just 16 interceptions. He has a completion rate of 64.9 percent, though his numbers dipped in his final year with the Tar Heels.
What Will the New England Patriots Do With Their QB Situation?
It remains to be seen what the New England Patriots will do with their QB situation. Despite the prospect of drafting Drake Maye, it’s still possible that the team wants a veteran quarterback in order to fast-track their rebuild in the post-Bill Belichick era.
Justin Fields has been mentioned as a potential target for the Patriots, and they could use the third pick to acquire him from the Bears–or potentially even a less desirable draft asset.
A number of veteran QBs like Russell Wilson are also expected to be available this offseason, and so if the Patriots are not sold on the QB they can pick at no. 3, they could pursue a bridge QB in the free agent market and take the best available talent in the draft instead.
Sure enough, the Patriots will have to really assess their options until the draft.

You say the Patriots don’t need a top tier receiver, that is why they suck so bad, they haven’t had one since Edelman, not one that could creat separation, the only one who came close is now in LV…
