The New England Patriots have one of the most important drafts in their history on the horizon. The main question is, what are they going to do with their No. 3 overall pick?
While many analysts have reported on their interest in moving down from that slot, Patriots legend Vince Wilfork says he knows exactly what the team should do with that crucial round one selection. He thinks it’s a no brainer for the team to select a quarterback for their future.
Vince Wilfork Says New England Patriots Need A Quarterback
Wilfork only new the Patriots with goat Tom Brady, and he thinks the team needs to get a quarterback at pick 3 as that is their most important need for the future. They do not have a franchise guy and they will not be able to get one outside of the draft for years to come.
Wilfork was quoted saying how the team needs to find their guy in a quarterback draft that is stacked.
“I’d go quarterback because this quarterback draft is so strong,” Wilfork said, (first transcribed by NESN). “You don’t know next year what it is. I’m going quarterback because I’m not going to get the receivers. I’m not going to get the top-skilled position players coming to my team if I don’t have a quarterback. It’s hard to sell a program and an organization if they don’t have a quarterback.”
While the Patriots will probably get either Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels, no matter what they will have the option to get one of them. If the Washington Commanders end up taking one at the second pick than they will not even have to make the choice between them and just take who is available.
New England Patriots Trading Down Would Be A Mistake
If the team does not take a quarterback the only other feasible thing for them to do is trade down in this years draft. That would be a big mistake as they have the opportunity to get a possible franchise guy at the most important position right now.
If the team does not find their quarterback then they are in for just more losing seasons over and over again. The only way to compete in the NFL today is to have one of the best quarterbacks in the league. The team needs that most importantly and than similarly to the Houston Texans, once you get your quarterback than you can fill in all the rest of the holes.
We will see what the Patriots end up doing in just a few weeks, but if it were up to Wilfork the team would be drafting a quarterback no matter what.
