New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones just took a massive step towards clearing his name with regard to the recent gun charges that were filed against him back in June. With the start of the new season just days away, a major thorn in the side of the 25-year-old has just been removed following the court’s decision on Tuesday.
New England Patriots CB Jack Jones’ Legal Battle
Back in June, two loaded guns were reportedly found in Jones’ luggage during a routine TSA inspection at the Logan Airport in Boston. Prosecutors dropped multiple charges on the New England CB, which included possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, unlawful possession of a firearm, and carrying a loaded firearm.
Jones has been battling this legal case over the past couple of months, and the former fourth-round pick admitted that it has been taking its toll on him:
“At times it can be difficult, but I try not to let the outside affect what’s going on, on the field,” Jones said in August. “I just try to come out here and try to focus up on football and let the outside be the outside, and worry about that on the outside.”
DA Drops Gun Charges on Jack Jones
Both Jack Jones and the Patriots got some massive news on Tuesday after the District Attorney decided to drop the charges against the former Arizona State standout. This report comes via Chris Mason of Mass Live:
“The Patriots cornerback moved his court date up to Tuesday morning and agreed to a deal in Boston Municipal Court. In exchange for a nolle prosequi — a formal document where prosecutors drop charges — Jones agreed to one year of pre-trial probation and 48 hours of community service,” Mason wrote.
In the document obtained by Mass Live, the Suffolk County District Attorney noted that “it cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Jones had knowledge that he possessed the firearms in his bag at the time of the incident.” Moreover, Jones was also cleared of the charges because the DA gathered that he “purchased both firearms lawfully in the state of Arizona and has taken steps to become a lawful gun owner in the state of Massachusetts.”
You have to note, however, that Jack Jones isn’t completely in the clear just yet. It’s still very much possible that the league will take action on this case. It would not be a complete shock if the NFL slaps the New England cornerback with some sort of suspension, thereby putting his availability for the Pats’ Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in jeopardy.
