The New England Patriots had a lot of questions to answer entering this offseason. One of those questions was what was going to happen to S Jabrill Peppers after the 2024 season. Well, this morning, the Patriots answered this question by awarding him with a contract extension. Read below for more details.
Jabrill Peppers Gets 3-Year Extension Worth $24 Million
According to Field Yates of ESPN, the New England Patriots have awarded Peppers a 3-year contract extension. This contract extension is expected to be worth around $24 million.
Originally, Peppers was entering the final year of his contract with the Patriots. He is going to earn just over $3 million in base salary. Now, Peppers’ contract extension will award him with a significant raise.
How Jabrill Peppers Earned His Extension
Peppers has bounced around the NFL throughout his career. This is his eighth season in the NFL, and he has divided his time with three different teams.
The Cleveland Browns selected Peppers with the 25th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Peppers spent his first two seasons there before being traded to the New York Giants in 2019 as part of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade package.
Since 2022, Peppers has been a member of the New England Patriots. Last season arguably ended up being the best of his career. So, what did Peppers do in 2023? He had two interceptions, a forced fumble, a sack, and 78 combined tackles.
New England Patriots Moving Forward
The Patriots still have a lot of work to do to improve upon their 2023 season. Last year, they finished with the third-worst record in the NFL. As a result, New England moved on from legendary head coach Bill Belichick and promoted Jerod Mayo to take his place.
Despite having such a poor record last season, defense was not a big problem for the Patriots. New England ranked seventh in the NFL in total yards allowed per game (301.6).
However, their pass defense was slightly weaker than their rush defense. That is because their rush defense was considered elite, allowing the fourth fewest rushing yards allowed per game (93.2). Meanwhile, their pass defense ranked 11th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (208.4).
Now, the Patriots have locked up one of the key players who helped them rank that high in defensive categories. We will have to see if New England can take advantage and improve upon this in 2024.
