Jerod Mayo understands that his first NFL draft pick as New England Patriots head coach will determine whether his stint at Foxborough will be long. Working for an owner who demands excellence will be tough on him, so nailing his QB1 will be the utmost priority.
Like most people in sports media, Ian Rapaport thinks that the New England Patriots will select a QB from this year’s pool of players. He then takes a wild guess on which player the former AFC East giants will select as the face of their rebuild.
Ian Rapaport believes New England Patriots will select the ‘best talent available’
Talking about the New England Patriots’ upcoming draft strategy, Rapaport believes that it’s in the team’s best interests to select a QB, even if their preferred player won’t be available by the time they’re on the clock.
The Spun’s Andrew Gould writes:
“My guess, right now, would be take the best quarterback available,” Rapoport told 98.5 The Sports Hub on Wednesday.
It’s probably an easy call if Williams or Maye are available, but the Patriots could be tempted to pivot to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. otherwise. Former franchise cornerstone Rob Gronkowski encouraged this avenue.
However, the NFL insider advised them to snag a quarterback, even if it feels like a reach.
“Let’s just say, for the sake of argument, that there are two great quarterbacks at the top of the draft, and the next guy is three,” Rapoport continued. “When else are you gonna be here? Just take him.”
Mac Jones is out of the picture for the Patriots, so they need to find a QB who will lead the team under center. Since they can’t get either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye without seriously gutting the team, they will have to get creative with getting their QB.
FOX Sports ranks Jayden Daniels as the next-best QB, but his numbers may be inflated by LSU’s incredible wide receiver room. JJ McCarthy, while holding incredible potential, may not be the right QB for a team that’s eager to win as soon as possible.
They could use this pick to trade for an intriguing QB, but going for a safer option under center may be what Jerod Mayo and the New England PAtriots need at this point.
