The upcoming release of the new College Football 25 video game has coincided with a slow release of certain aspects of the game.
One of the small parts of the new game is the ratings of every team. Every player and team is given a specific rating, maxing out at 99 overall. College Football 25 and EA Sports have released their rating of what they deem to be the top-25 offenses and the top-25 defenses in college football for 2024.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers were left off of the top-25 defenses list in College Football 25

EA Sports has notoriously struggled with ratings in the past. This method of slowly releasing the ratings of teams and players has been something they’ve done with Madden, their NFL series, for quite some time.
Some speculate that EA Sports purposely makes controversial ratings in order to drum up press for the release of their upcoming games. Seeing as this is the first college football video game since the release of NCAA 14 over a decade ago, a little bit of extra press seems unnecessary.
EA Sports also managed to drum up some controversy with their list of “hardest places to play” as they included some teams in their top 25 that struggle to fill their stadium on a weekly basis. Their release of the top-25 offenses and defenses was no different.

Many fans were notably upset at the addition of the Colorado Buffaloes and the USC Trojans to the top-25 defenses list. The USC Trojans were 116th in total defense while the Colorado Buffaloes were 127th in total defense.
These lists are indefensible and need to be corrected immediately. This will impact dynasty mode and result in really unrealistic simulations. Colorado and USC being top 25 defensive units seems intentionally wrong.

Many Nebraska Cornhuskers fans took to social media to voice their disappointment with the absence of their favorite team from the top-25 defenses list released by EA Sports.
They gave Colorado a top 20 defense, ranked Iowa at 13, and Nebraska is not even included in the top 25. Whoever made these rankings are the biggest idiots at EA https://t.co/U5Yt4llfz0

I’m hardly a Nebraska apologist…
But EA having Colorado’s defense ranked in front of the Huskers should literally be a crime.— JeffreyTheGreek (@JeffreyTheGreek) June 27, 2024
Football and Video Games.
My passions combine. And Nebraska despite a good defensive season was nowhere to be found in EA Sports Top 25 defenses for the new game. #Huskers #GBR https://t.co/10KgzrqjJ9

Did the Nebraska Cornhuskers deserve to be on the top-25 defenses list for College Football 25?

The Huskers had one of the best defensive seasons the program has seen since the days of former head coach Bo Pelini. They finished 11th in total defense nationally. Their strong defense is the only reason they had a chance to make a bowl game as they suffered through one of the worst offensive seasons in the program’s history.
On top of being 11th in total defense, they were 13th in points allowed and ninth in rushing defense. They held the opposing team to two scores or less in eight of their 12 games.
Notable areas in need of improvement for the Huskers were passing defense, a stat in which they ranked 40th in the nation, and big games. Despite a consistently stout defense, the Huskers allowed the Michigan Wolverines to score 45 points and the Colorado Buffaloes to score 36 points on them.
Regardless of statistics, defensive coordinator Tony White was a hot commodity this offseason. Many other programs could see the rapid changes he made to the Huskers with his 3-3-5 defense. The Huskers paid him enough to stay for another year, but White will continue to be a threat to become a head coach if his defense stays on the level at which it was in 2023. White talked about the attitude of his defense in an article from 247 Sports.
“So the defense plays their best ball when they get a chance to go play. The cool thing is when you watch them run out when those things happen. It’s just like we said, ‘Hey, we get to go play.’ That’s the neat thing about it. That’s the attitude we’re talking about.”
