The Minnesota Vikings will definitely be in need of a new starting quarterback after Kirk Cousins leaves the team in free agency. Fortunately, that role can possibly land on former Denver Broncos star Russell Wilson, especially if he decides to play for the Twin Cities.
After two seasons in Denver, Wilson has never really lived up to the $242.6 million contract he signed with the Seattle Seahawks before being traded to the Broncos. This offseason, though, the quarterback is free to choose his own team after Denver decided to absorb a cap hit worth $85 million for him.
As it stands, there are several landing spots that can work well for Wilson. Some of these teams include the Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New England Patriots.
While these teams may work for Wilson, there’s a case to be made for the Vikings. Since Cousins is on his way out, there’s a situation that’s ready for the quarterback to get used to next season.
The Main Reason Why The Minnesota Vikings and Russell Wilson Can Work Well in 2024
After failing to qualify for a playoff spot due to Cousins’ season-ending injury, the Vikings can potentially run it back later this year with Wilson as their new quarterback. Jeremy Fowler explained how this can work in his article for ESPN:
“The Vikings are attractive for any prospective quarterback — they have all-world receiver Justin Jefferson and a quarterback-friendly coach in Kevin O’Connell. There’s also a belief in some league circles that Minnesota, should it lose Cousins, is eager to reset its books and possibly take a swing on a quarterback in the draft.
If that’s the case, Wilson could be a good option for a year. But Minnesota is in a similar boat to Atlanta in that it could have several options to evaluate, including Mayfield and Fields,” Fowler wrote.
Even with a one-year deal, Wilson can still do a lot more for the Vikings than a first-year quarterback from the draft. With his experience and talent, the Vikings may have a better chance of making the playoffs with him in the lineup.
It remains to be seen where Wilson will land next or if the Vikings have what it takes to sign the quarterback. In any case, Minnesota and the four other teams will draw more attraction in the coming days to see whether the Broncos star will land in any of those franchises.
