The Minnesota Vikings are in a complicated situation when it comes to dealing with Kirk Cousins. Cousins has shown throughout the six seasons he’s spent with the team that he can take the team to the playoffs.
However, the fact that they don’t have any Lombardi trophies to show for their wins is making things interesting when it comes to Cousins’ contract extension. While it’s clear that he still can lead the team to a playoff berth, there may be voices within the organization that are questioning whether he’s the right man to help the team make it past the hump and into the Super Bowl.
As the negotiations between Cousins and the Vikings continue to remain at a standstill, one former GM noted the contract drama to one he experienced before.
Former GM compares Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins dilemma to Seattle Seahawks’ 1992 drama
Randy Mueller was a general manager for the Seattle Seahawks during the 1992 season, and the team had a similar problem with a talented QB who won the team and the fans with his solid QB play.
Heavy’s Trevor Squire wrote more about the achievements of the QB and the issues the Seahawks faced during that free agency:
Seattle had a 51-44 record with Dave Krieg at quarterback from 1986 to 1991. Undrafted in 1980, Krieg was a three-time Pro Bowler. He had won three playoff games and even led a loaded Seahawks offense to the NFC title game in 1984, winning over the fan base and cementing himself as a starter.
The Seahawks front office was confident they could be a winning team with an above .500 record in 1992. But after a trio of first-round exits with Krier at quarterback over a seven-season span, the front office could not carry on with business as usual.
The team then decided to move on from Krieg and missed out on making the playoffs the following season. He’s not pointing out that this is what would happen to the Minnesota Vikings if they let go of Cousins, but the team needs to understand when it’s time to make a change.
Cousins will find a team that’s interested in his services. Even before he was deactivated for the season, a stat line of 2331 passing yards and 18 touchdowns in eight starts will always grab attention.
If there’s any time for the Vikings to let Cousins go, 2024 would be a great place. There are plenty of high-ceiling QBs that they can develop into a franchise cornerstone if they’re smart with their team-building approach.
