There appears to be no significant progress surrounding Kirk Cousins’ new contract with the Minnesota Vikings. According to reports, both parties have been talking about a potential extension, but it does not seem like they’re making a lot of headway.
At this point, it seems like Cousins could be headed into free agency.
Minnesota Vikings’ Stance on Kirk Cousins Contract
It does appear that the Vikings want Cousins to remain. However, they still have their limits. It doesn’t seem like they will be willing to move heaven and earth to retain the services of the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback.
In fact. according to NFL insider Albert Breer of SI, Minnesota’s front office have no intention of offering Cousins a guaranteed deal:
“The current Minnesota brass, now going into its third season, really likes Cousins, but it’s also been made clear that they’re not going to go contractually where the previous regime did twice, and give Cousins a fully guaranteed deal,” Breer wrote.
As Breer indicated above, all of Counsins’ previous deals with the Vikings since he joined the squad in 2018 have been fully guaranteed. The fact that Minnesota has now opted to take a different approach speaks volumes of its current valuation of the former Michigan State standout.
Breer also reported, though, that the Vikings have decided to “touch base” with Cousins’ camp last week. While this could be considered a good start, you can’t help but think that the front office will need to do much more than that if they’re serious about extending their quarterback’s deal in the immediate future.
Whatever the case might be, you can be sure that Cousins’ name will be filling headlines for the next several weeks, if not months.
