Mike McCarthy was reportedly Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ second choice to coach the team in 2024 after a crushing loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round. Jones said before the offseason he would evaluate how McCarthy performed in the postseason before deciding his fate for 2024.
There were rumors the Cowboys would be interested in hiring former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach, had to be appealing to an owner who publicly says he desperately wants to win another championship.
Bill Belichick was in play for Dallas
According to Mike Florio with NBC Sports, Jones is believed to have contacted Belichick last week regarding the Cowboys job. However, Belichick didn’t want to deal with the media circus in Dallas or Philadelphia:
“Although Belichick to Atlanta is not done yet, there’s buzz around the league that it’s moving in that direction. As one league source explained it, Belichick is believed to be done with “big-market media,” making him more inclined to go to a place like Atlanta than Dallas or Philadelphia.
As to the Cowboys and the Eagles, there’s also a belief in some league circles that both team expressed interest in Belichick, that Belichick didn’t reciprocate, and that those teams then decided to stick with their current coaches.”
Mike McCarthy was Jerry Jones’s second choice
If the report is accurate, McCarthy was Jones’ plan B to be the head coach in Dallas next season. That would make sense why Jones waited a few days after the Packers’ loss to announce his intention to keep McCarthy with the Cowboys in the last year of McCarthy’s contract.
Another thing the report tells us is that Jones is unwilling to give up his PR circus to land a coach like Belichick. Belichick wouldn’t have cared for Jones’ radio appearances and other comments. Jones doesn’t care enough about winning to give them up.
Enjoy the bread and circuses, Cowboys fans.
