As of Wednesday evening, the New England Patriots have not announced their plans for head coach Bill Belichick for the 2024 season. There have been reports in recent weeks that the Patriots are interested in trading Belichick to get some compensation for the legendary head coach.
We’ll look at a trade proposal that could send Belichick to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys are considering canning McCarthy
The Cowboys are reportedly considering firing head coach Mike McCarthy if the Cowboys have another quick exit in the playoffs this month. If the Patriots are patient and wait through Wild Card weekend, they could trade Belichick to the Cowboys if the Green Bay Packers win in Dallas on Sunday.
On Wednesday, Mike Florio with NBC Sports wrote about Belichick’s ties with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Florio thinks Belichick could team up with a talented Cowboys team to win a Super Bowl for the aging leadership duo:
It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Belichick, by saying he’d be willing to surrender some power to stay in New England, was also sending a message to potential future employers. And if Belichick is willing to defer to anyone when it comes to shopping for the groceries with which Belichick would cook the meal, it’s Jerry and Stephen Jones.
Here’s what Belichick said about the Joneses before the Patriots played the Cowboys during the 2023 regular season: “I have a ton of respect for Jerry and Stephen, and the way they run the organization down there. They’ve had decades of success. They were really the team of the ‘90s with Jimmy [Johnson] and they’ve been good. They’ve been competitive every year, obviously more than competitive. They’ve had a lot of great players down there. Tony [Romo] had a great run.
“Those are great years there with Tony, Coach [Bill] Parcells. We played them here in the early 2000s, but I always keep an eye on them, just the way they do things. They’ve gotten a lot of players that they’ve gotten a lot of production from that I’d say aren’t big-name players — free agents, guys that they dig out down there. I think their scouting staff does a good job. They’re very experienced. Almost all of their scouts have been with the Cowboys their entire career, so they home-grow them and they learn their system.”
New England Patriots send Belichick to Dallas in this trade proposal
Belichick would likely fetch an early Day 2 pick from most teams with head coaching vacancies right now. But the Cowboys might have to give up a first-round pick since, as a playoff team, their first-round value is worth less in the 2024 NFL Draft than teams like the Washington Commanders for Los Angeles Chargers.
Patriots receive
- 2024 first-round pick
Cowboys receive
- Belichick
The Cowboys have a roster that can compete for a Super Bowl now and in the 2024 season. The Cowboys could return to the Super Bowl with a proven winner like Belichick. Belichick would appreciate being traded to a team that didn’t need a rebuild.
A trade would have to come quickly, as the Patriots need to find a new coach for the 2024 season. So the best chance of a deal like this getting done would be if the Packers pull the upset on Sunday. If not, Belichick could come to Dallas if the Cowboys lose in the Divisional Round.
But the Cowboys would have serious competition for Belichick on the open market.
