Texas A&M is set to hire a former defensive coordinator for Jimbo Fisher after all, per multiple reports. The Aggies were set to hire Kentucky head coach Mike Stoops Saturday night. But the deal to sign the former Florida State defensive coordinator of Fisher’s fell through.
Reports were linking Duke head coach Mike Elko to the job Sunday morning. Elko served as the Aggies defensive coordinator from the 2018-21 seasons. The Aggies also considered promoting their current interim coach and co-defensive coordinator, Elijah Robinson.
Texas A&M keeping next head coaching hire in Fisher’s tree
According to Pete Thamel with ESPN, the Aggies agreed to a deal with Elko Sunday afternoon. Elko consistently had one of the best defenses in college football during his time at College Station. He went 16-9 during his two seasons at Duke.
One thing is clear from this hire: the Aggies have chosen not to make a clear break from the Fisher coaching tree.
