The Michigan State Spartans are gearing up for a new era. New head coach Jonathan Smith is ready for a new era in East Lansing. When a new coach comes in many of the current players will look elsewhere. Starting quarterback Katin Houser announced that he is going to enter the transfer portal.

Michigan State QB Katin Houser To Enter Transfer Portal
Houser is a redshirt freshman who started seven games for the Spartans in 2023. He threw for 1,130 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. He becomes an interesting prospect for any program. Houser still has three years of eligibility left meaning that he could be a program’s long-term plan at the quarterback position. Quarterbacks are always at a premium so I would expect a lot of programs to give him a look.
Not Surprising
On the one hand, you never want to see a player leave your program. However, whenever a new coach comes in, it isn’t surprising to see a mass exodus of players. Players come to play for certain coaches in a certain scheme. If that changes, players now have the ability to enter the transfer portal and find a new home. I would expect that more players will leave the program now that Smith and his staff are coming in. The good news is that Smith is a great hire for the program and should bring some stability to a volatile program.
Katin Houser will be looking for a new home and Michigan State will be looking for a new quarterback. Hopefully, both entities will be able to find success on their new paths.
