The Michigan football program will look to repeat as champions next season with the newly hired Sherrone Moore at the helm. The Wolverines replaced the departing Jim Harbaugh last month as they transition into a new era of Michigan football. However, one college football columnist pegs the Wolverines promotional hire as a middle-of-the-pack signing. Per Jesse Simonton of On3 Sports, the college football insider gives UM’s hiring of Sherrone Moore a B, placing him well behind other new head coaching hires in the Power-Five.

Of the 15 head coaching grades handed out by Simonton, five coaches earned a better grade than Michigan’s Moore. Meanwhile, Washington’s Jedd Fisch, Northwestern’s David Braun, Duke’s Manny Diaz, Boston College’s Bill O’Brien, and Arizona’s Brent Brennan received the same grade as Moore.
Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore: Shown Little Love Despite Successful Track Record
On3’s Jesse Simonton believes Michigan football’s newest bench boss, Sherrone Moore, undoubtedly deserves a chance to lead a program. However, Simonton questions how well the Wolverines will operate next season, with the program potentially facing sanctions from NCAA investigations and his predecessor, Jim Harbaugh, taking much of his staff to the NFL.
“He (Moore) is beloved by players and alumni and should guide Michigan through some potentially murky waters with looming NCAA investigations. Moore has quickly learned the challenges of following a legend, though, watching Jim Harbaugh raid his potential staff for most assistants.”
However, Simonton does recognize that Moore performed well as an interim head coach last season despite being a 37-year-old OC with no former frontman experience. The national college football analyst said, “Moore was 4-0 as the interim, with as good of an on-the-job audition imaginable by leading the Wolverines to wins over Penn State and Ohio State.”
Michigan Wolverines: Sherrone Moore to Take Over in 2024
Moore joined the Wolverines in 2018, serving as the tight ends coach from 2018 to 2020. The Kansas native transitioned to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2021, where he spent two seasons. However, he became the offensive play-caller in 2023 while remaining the OL coach. Michigan thrived under Moore, scoring 35.9 points per game, the 14th-best mark in the NCAA. He also served as an interim head coach, with bench boss Jim Harbaugh serving two separate suspensions. Although Harbaugh earned statistics for the wins accrued during the second suspension, Moore led the team to victories over the Ohio State Buckeyes, Maryland Terrapins, and Penn State Nittany Lions.
Moore helped lead Michigan to a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2023. He will become the next head coach for the storied program this fall. However, Moore and the Wolverines must replace the dynamic backfield duo of quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum next season. Star back Donovan Edwards, who rushed six times for 104 yards in his team’s title game win over the Washington Huskies, figures to slot in as the primary running back in 2024. Meanwhile, Ourlads has redshirt sophomore Alex Orji as the heir apparent to McCarthy. Orji, a dual-threat quarterback, rushed 15 times for 86 yards and a score last season while not throwing a pass.
