The Miami Dolphins, who made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons under Head Coach Mike McDaniel are heading into next season as one of the favorites to win their division.  The Dolphins were one of the highest scoring teams in the league during the regular season putting up just under 28 points per game on average with Tua Tagovailoa under center.

Since being drafted 5th overall by Miami in 2020, Tagovailoa has taken over as their starting quarterback and led the league in passing yards this past season with 4,625.  His efforts this season afforded him his first Pro Bowl selection and talks of a contract extension moving forward.

According to Spotrac’s market value calculations, Tagovailoa is projected to make $220 million during a 4-year period.  $105 million of that money will be funded in full at signing with $165 million being guaranteed through the 2027 season.  This contract would make him a Dolphin until he is a free agent once again in 2029.

Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel “Very Encouraged” to Extend Tagovailoa’s Contract

When asked by reporters on the progression of Tagovailoa’s future in Miami, Head Coach Mike McDaniel re-assured that both sides are working hard to get a deal done.

“Both his representation and our organization are hard at work.  Those timelines are impossible to predict.  My main concern this off-season has been communicating what Tua needs from his head coach and his offensive coaching staff, which is what things can we identify to continue the progression of your game the same way that we have since Day One.”

Not only does McDaniel seem encouraged to sign Tagovailoa long term, getting an extension done would benefit the Dolphins salary cap situation.  Miami is currently 28.5 million over the cap heading into this year’s draft and signing him would cut it down depending on the breakdown of his next contract.  Tagovailoa, who is coming off his best season so far in his young career will likely be a Dolphin for the future.
