Washington Commanders co-owner Earvin Magic Johnson sent the team and its head coach a message following an embarrassment on Thursday Night Football. The Commanders were blown out 40-20 at home to a Chicago Bears team that had lost 14 straight games.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera came into the season on the hot seat. It’s getting warmer after the 2-3 Commanders blew a game that should have been an easy bounce back from a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4.
Magic Johnson sends a message to Washington’s Commanders
Johnson took to X after the game to explain the loss. Johnson was unhappy with the Commanders’ first-half energy, as the team trailed 27-3 to start the third quarter:
“Tonight the Commanders played with no intensity or fire. We didn’t compete in the first half and got down 27-3 heading into halftime. It was too big of a hole to climb out of and that is why we ended up losing 40-20.”

The message from Johnson was clear. The team came out flat against the Bears.
Rivera will have to light a fire under his team after the mini-bye. The Commanders play the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6 and the New York Giants in Week 7. Those are games the Commanders should and need to win.
Can Rivera bring out the intensity with this group?
