The Los Angeles Rams recently had a big announcement involving their star quarterback, Matthew Stafford. It was revealed that they were going to restructure his contract to give Stafford more financial security moving forward.
Now, more specific details as to what additional money Stafford should expect have been revealed. How much more money is Stafford going to get? Read below to find out.
Matthew Stafford to Receive an Additional $9 Million
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Matthew Stafford is going to receive an additional $9 million guaranteed following the restructuring of his contract. Stafford was already making around $40 million annually. However, the 2024 season was originally going to be the last season he had any guaranteed money left on his contract.
This resulted in potentially two years of salary for Stafford being put at risk. While some of that risk is still on the table, this contract restructuring does bump up some of his guaranteed money.
How exactly did this happen? Well, $5 million of his expected salary from next year got pushed up to this season. In addition to that, Stafford now has an additional $4 million roster bonus for next year built into his contract.
Nearing the End?
Believe it or not, Stafford was selected as the first overall pick way back in the 2009 NFL Draft. He spent his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions. Then, Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. It turned out to be a good trade for both sides, as the Lions built towards the future while the Rams captured a Super Bowl in Stafford’s first season there.
Now, Stafford is 36 years old, and he is entering his 16th season in the NFL. It is no wonder why he was looking for a little more security in his current contract. While Stafford still performs at a high level, there are not many active quarterbacks in the NFL older than Stafford.
Los Angeles Rams Moving Forward
The Rams arguably shut down a holdout situation before one could potentially begin. Los Angeles also keeps its offensive veteran leader happy after losing star DT Aaron Donald due to retirement. Last season, the Rams surprised a lot of people by sneaking into the playoffs. Now, they look to build off of that in 2024.
