Dade City, Florida is a close-knit community that was happy to honor one of their own this spring by naming a street in honor of NFL quarterback Michael Penix Jr. This is seen to be a heartfelt tribute to a local legend whose journey originated in a small town in Pasco County and is stretching into the National Football League.

The hometown of Little Mike, Dade City, made the news throughout the nation, as it was stated that a new sign: “Michael Penix Jr. Blvd,” was being opened up around Main Street. Some friends and relatives had gathered around the courthouse square and showed tribute to the star athlete who originally made the waves playing youth football in the historic town.

    Michael Penix Jr. History

The story of Penix ascending to collegiate stardom (first at Indiana, then in Washington) has been widely covered. He set a record as a Heisman candidate at UW, passing for more than 350 yards a game with a cannon arm and field perception, which people in Dade City predicted would happen when he was very young. It is local lore that he was throwing footballs as a toddler, and this was a foreboding signal long before the scouts of college or the pros ever showed interest.

All that rich history can now be seen on the streets of the city. There was a proper ribbon-cutting ceremony, which included city officials, town residents, and even representatives of the City Hall of Georgia. In this moment, there is something greater than civic pride; it is an idea that the talent residing in the small communities can actually bloom in the largest places.

This is because in Dade City, school programs are close-knit, and hence this naming is not ceremonial but a guiding light. Young athletes passing by a street named “Michael Penix Jr. Blvd” may find within them a form of greatness that they wouldn’t otherwise have known.

Going forward, Michael Penix Jr. enters the NFL season with the lasting tribute from Dade City. That momentum will push him throughout his career, and he’ll forever carry the spirit of his hometown.
