The Los Angeles Rams were looking for some sort of stability entering the 2024 NFL season. This is mainly the case because Rams legendary DT Aaron Donald announced his retirement earlier this offseason.
As a result, you can argue the Rams are in a transition period. With that in mind, it seemed to become more important to secure their starting quarterback for multiple years. Because of that, there has been a big update regarding Stafford’s contract.
Los Angeles Rams Adjusting QB Matthew Stafford’s Contract
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Los Angeles Rams are adjusting Matthew Stafford’s contract. Because of this, Rams head coach Sean McVay reported that Stafford is participating in training camp. It was reportedly possible that Stafford would hold out if there was no agreement made between Stafford and the Rams on new contract terms.
Issues With Matthew Stafford’s Old Contract
Stafford had a few key issues with the way his old contract was structured. The main issue was the lack of guaranteed money after the 2024 season.
Back in 2022, Stafford signed a 4-year extension with the Rams worth $160 million. At that time, he received a $60 million signing bonus. On top of this, his salary was essentially guaranteed through the end of the 2024 season.
The problem became that there was only about $15 million left in guaranteed money after this season. As a result, Stafford was looking for more security, and the Rams were faced with the decision of how much longer they wanted Stafford to be their quarterback for. Now, it appears the Rams have answered that question.
Exact contract details are not known at the time of writing. However, it is safe to say that there is likely going to be a lot more guaranteed money moving forward.
Los Angeles Rams Moving Forward
As mentioned above, the Rams are somewhat entering a transitional period. However, with this new contract, they have created more stability at the quarterback position. With the talent the Rams have at wide receiver, this is a big victory for them.
The two main wide receivers they have are Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. Kupp is widely regarded as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. As for Nacua, he broke multiple rookie records last season. Now, Stafford has a chance to develop further chemistry with both of these wide receivers.
