REPORT: The Center of the Los Angeles Rams Exercised his Player Option, Making him an Unrestricted Free Agent

The Los Angeles Rams have approximately $40 million in cap space and have many free agents but cannot afford to sign everybody.

Their starting center exercised his player option.

Coleman Shelton exercised his player option and will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Shelton signed a 2-year extension last offseason with a major provision

Coleman Shelton signed a 2-year, $4,750,000 contract last offseason with the possibility of voiding the final year of his contract if he plays over 55% of offensive snaps during the 2023 season.

Shelton beat out Brian Allen for the starting job this season. He started every game, finishing with six penalties, two sacks allowed, a 64.5 PFF Grade, and represented 97% of offensive snaps.

Since he played over 55% of offensive snaps, his contract voids, and he will be an unrestricted free agent.

Shelton is expected to test free agency, but their GM wants him back

The Los Angeles Rams and Shelton are not expected to get a deal done before free agency starts, but Les Snead wants him back.

“I would say most players get to this point where, ‘Okay, the season’s over,’ they’re in the last year of their contract, there is a side of the process where, to help figure it out the market, is somewhat go to the marketplace,” Snead said. “And sometimes you gotta be patient in this process, which I do think is very healthy and productive for both sides. Because if you try to do something beforehand, it’s really just probably the Rams side. But when you go to the market, then it’s 31 other teams involved, and then you can use it to come up with a win-win.”

Will the Los Angeles Rams bring him back, or will he sign with a new team?
