Rookie wideouts are exciting additions to any NFL team, as they bring instantaneous offense for any scheme. This is why the Los Angeles Chargers have a lot of hope that Laddy McConkey will make an impact the same way Puka Nacua did for the neighboring Rams.
It’s not hard to see McConkey making an impact with the Chargers. While his numbers in his final year in Georgia left a lot to be desired, it cannot be denied that he’s one of their more talented players. The fact that he was selected 34th overall in the recently concluded draft shows just how valuable the Chargers consider him to be.
Their trust in his talents were also just enough to reward him with a surprising contract that would make many people blink twice.
Los Angeles Chargers give Ladd McConkey the biggest guaranteed money out of players picked 34th in NFL history
The 34th pick may not rake in tons of cash the same way the top ten selections do, but it’s still high up the board. One could expect that the money players selected at this spot is still decent enough to change the lives of the athlete and his family.
However, Yardbarker’s Andrew Kulha revealed that the nitty gritty of the deal may be more surprising than initally anticipated:
According to Ian Rapoport, the guaranteed money on the four-year deal (a figure which hasn’t yet been disclosed) will go down as a record amount for a player taken No. 34 overall in the NFL Draft.
According to Jeff Kerr, McConkey will make more guaranteed money than Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, who was the 2023 NFL Draft’s No. 34 overall pick. Per Spotrac, LaPorta was given $7.5 million in guaranteed money.
It might be surprising for fans not following the college game to see McConkey even get more than LaPorta, but his highlight reel would tell you that he deserves every bit of money thrown his way.
Whether he actually lives up to his potential or not is entirely up to him and the offense Jim Harbaugh cooks up.
