Los Angeles Chargers hire former Bears Head Coach Marc Trestman
The Los Angeles Chargers and Jim Harbaugh have hired former Bears Head Coach Marc Trestman as the Senior Offensive Assistant according to Adam Schefter.
This is Marc Trestman’s first job back into the NFL in 7 years. It looks like Harbaugh has most of his staff figured out as we head into the early part of the off-season.
Los Angeles Charger Offense
The Chargers now have some veterans in charge of their offense pairing their Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman with Marc Trestman. Marc has experience in the NFL but has worked in professional or college football for most of his career.
Some may wonder how or why Trestman made his way onto the Charger coaching staff. The only connection seems to be Marc working for John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens after his stint with the Chicago Bears. Trestman worked for Harbaugh as an assistant, then eventually took over as Offensive Coordinator. His time there was short lived as he was let go a year later mid-season.
Trestman has been regarded as an offensive mind among many professional football circles. He has seen the most amount of success in the CFL, where as a head coach he has won 3 Grey Cups.
He is now in charge of one of the top quarterback’s in the NFL Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert has averaged 24.4 points per game (about a point higher than the league average). We shall see if Trestman and the Charger offense can help that improve.
Chicago Bears Former Head Coach
Marc Trestman spent time as a positional coach prior for the Vikings, 49ers, and Saints throughout the 80s and 90s. He also did different periods within the college ranks and made a name for himself in the Canadian Football League.
Trestman’s most “famous” time was spent in the NFL as the Head Coach for the Chicago Bears. During the 2013 and 2014 season Trestman went 13-19 and faced much criticism for his ability to take charge of his team.
Trestman called the offense, along with his Head Coaching responsibilities. In the 2013 season Trestman led the Bears offense to the 2nd ranked scoring offense in the NFL, the only team better was the record setting Broncos.
In 2014 the offensive scoring numbers dropped to 23rd in the NFL. That drop, along with other issues that poked through media circles, led to the firing of Marc Trestman.
Trestman’s Leadership
During a leadership podcast that Trestman hosts, Brandon Marshall spoke to his former coach’s ability to lead. “You were ahead of your time and if there’s one thing you could potentially have done differently is understand that. But I don’t know if you could have,” Marshall told his former coach.”
“The old way of doing things in sports was ‘hey, I’ve got these four leaders, you guys are going to do everything…you guys run the show.’ And you came in and you brought in what everyone is adopting now.” This from Brandon Marshall in a 2021 interview.
We shall see if the ability to lead, as well as the positives of his offensive play calling, can lead to a promising future in Los Angeles.
