The Las Vegas Raiders are sitting No. 13 in the NFL Draft order. By all accounts, they are in no position even to sniff getting Caleb Williams drafted. Heck, it’s a stretch to believe they even have a chance to get Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and perhaps even JJ McCarthy.
Yet, the Raiders are planning to interview the projected No. 1 overall pick. Why is this? Le’ts look at a few possible reasons.
Trading Everything to Move Up
The thing about the Raiders is that they don’t seem to have too much to offer that would equate to a number one overall pick. In a direct trade with the Bears, they don’t offer a QB, other picks, or even skill position players that would be worth trading the pick for.
The best offer that the Raiders really have right now is a crazy offer that is full of 2024 and future draft picks. Maybe the Raiders would be willing to trade their 1st and 2nd round draft picks as well as next year’s 1st round draft pick and probably some more late round picks for the single pick from the Chicago Bears. For the Bears, this may cause them to pause on moving past Justin Fields this year and allow them to get more offensive weapons.
Outside of a crazy deal like this, it’s tough to see a scenario where the Raiders would be able to move up. Yet, it would be worth it for the Raiders.
Raiders Desperately Need a QB
Last year, the Raiders were able to pull off a somewhat mediocre record (8-9) with essentially no quarterback. Jimmy Garappolo and Aiden O’Connell played sub-par last year, throwing for 19 touchdowns and 18 interceptions and only 3,400 yards passing. Additionally, the Raiders lost five games that were a one-score game. In other words, with a great quarterback, the Raiders very easily could have been an 11-6 kind of team, which would have put them very safely in the Playoffs.
The issue of course, is getting a great quarterback isn’t as simple as just wanting one. The easiest solution may be throwing everything to the Chicago Bears and getting Caleb Williams. It’s a huge risk. If Williams ends up being a bust, the Raiders may set themselves back a few years with the loss of talent and draft picks it would get to get him.
Conclusion
The Las Vegas Raiders wouldn’t likely interview Caleb Williams just for the sake of getting an interview with a player that they have no desire or chance of getting; instead, they would use that time and energy to focus on another player they could get, possibly Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix. Yet, they are using their time and resources to interview Williams, leaving the biggest question: what’s next?
