Kansas State football’s Howard, alongside former Mississippi State Bulldogs gunslinger Will Rogers, are the two biggest named quarterbacks within the transfer portal.
Will Howard: Career with Kansas State Football
Will Howard joined Kansas State as a three-star recruit in 2020. After starter Skylar Thompson suffered an injury, Howard started the season’s final seven games. As a true freshman, he completed 53.6% of his passes for eight touchdowns and ten picks. He returned to his backup role behind Thompson in 2021 before competing with Nebraska Cornhuskers transfer Adrian Martinez for the starting gig in 2022.
Despite losing out on the starting position, the Wildcats again turned to Howard after their starting quarterback suffered an injury. Howard performed much better this time, throwing for 15 touchdowns against four picks in seven games. He also ran for three scores. He shined in Kansas State football’s upset win over TCU in the Big 12 title game, accounting for three touchdowns in an epic 31-28 victory.
Howard played well this season, accounting for 33 touchdowns against ten interceptions. He became the program’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns during a game against Baylor in mid-November, surpassing Josh Freeman.
Kansas State Wildcats Football: Eyeing New Quarterback in 2024
Kansas State football will hope to compete for a Big 12 title again in 2024 despite losing quarterback Will Howard to the transfer portal. Freshman Avery Johnson played behind Howard in 2023, going 23-of-35 for 301 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks. He also ran 45 times for 225 yards and six touchdowns. A four-star prospect, Johnson shined in each game he played in, including rushing 13 times for 90 yards and five touchdowns in a 38-21 win over Texas Tech.
Jake Rubley also threw a pass for K-State this season but will join Howard in the transfer portal. He spent three seasons in Manhattan but threw only six passes in six games.
