The Kansas City Chiefs are prepared for the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens but will be without one of the most significant pieces on the defensive side of the football. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr has been ruled out for today’s action with a neck injury and this could be tough for the Kansas City Chiefs as Gay would have been used as the quarterback spy against Lamar Jackson.
Willie Gay Jr. has been a bit underrated as he has five total tackles (two solo, three assisted) with a pass deflection in the two postseason games thus far. He left the AFC Divisional Round game last week against the Buffalo Bills and was ruled out after halftime. The Chiefs were able to adjust their game plan but this game is going to be more difficult to navigate.
What can the Kansas City Chiefs do to win and advance to the Super Bowl?
When you have the combination of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, it is difficult to not feel confident in the Chiefs. The Chiefs have the experience as they have made the AFC Championship Game every season since Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback for the team.
The Chiefs defense has been dominating as well as they finished the year with the second-fewest points per game allowed (17.3) and have beaten some tough offenses in the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs need to keep Lamar Jackson contained, which is easier said than done, and not let the MVP use his legs.
The Chiefs have a great secondary so they should limit red zone appearances as well. If Kansas City’s offense can convert in the red zone and force a mistake, they can easily find themselves picking up a road win heading to the Super Bowl.
