Kansas City Chiefs fans had to hold their collective breath after hearing about star tight end Travis Kelce’s injury from Tuesday’s practice session. The eight-time Pro Bowler was forced to exit practice after reportedly hyperextending his knee, thereby putting his status for Thursday’s season opener against the Detroit Lions in jeopardy.
Kansas City Chiefs Star Travis Kelce Could Miss Week 1 Vs. Lions
Chris Jones is still in the midst of a prolonged contract holdout with the front office and he remains a doubt for Thursday’s Week 1 bout against Detroit. Now, Kelce is also in danger of being forced to sit out the season opener, which could leave Kansas City missing at least two stars when they kick off their title defense.
After Tuesday’s practice, head coach Andy Reid did not provide much with regard to Kelce’s injury status against the Lions:
“They’re looking at it now, so we’ll see how it goes,” Reid said, via Myles Simmons of PFT.
That’s not exactly a very confident statement from the Chiefs shot-caller.
Optimistic Injury Update on Travis Kelce’s Knee
Despite this alarming development, there is still some good news on the Travis Kelce front. According to Myles Simmons of PFT, the Chiefs believe that their All-Pro TE may have just dodged a bullet here:
“According to a report from NFL Media, Kelce is not believed to have suffered a long-term injury. Kelce’s status, however, is in doubt for Thursday’s season opener against Detroit,” Simmons wrote.
The report also states that the team plans to wait until the swelling on Kelce’s knee goes down before they assess his status moving forward.
Simmons confirmed that Kelce is now doubtful to play against the Lions, but the silver lining for Chiefs fans is that their superstar shouldn’t be out for long — if he even ends up missing any time because of this injury.
