The Kansas City Chiefs don’t look like the usual team NFL fans have become accustomed to seeing this time of year.
Patrick Mahomes and company will make the playoffs — and it’s hard to doubt the Chiefs in the postseason — but they have looked lackluster on offense, out of sync and have lost four of their last six when the most dangerous teams are peaking.
Surprisingly, the Chiefs defense has been their strong suit this season. They have the No. 2 overall defense in the NFL with two games to go in the regular season allowing 287 yards per game and just 30 touchdowns to their opponents this season so far.
While the Kansas City Chiefs defensive strength is against the pass, ranking third in the league in that category allowing just 173.8 yards through the air, they have struggled against the run at times.
As it stands, Kansas City has the No. 18 defense against the run, allowing 113.5 on the ground per game.
One of the brightest spots and a staple of the Chiefs defense for the last several years has been defensive tackle Chris Jones. Right now, Jones has 28 tackles and 8.5 sacks, but Kansas City has a major decision to make in regards to the future of their superstar defensive tackle.
Proposal Has Kansas CIty Chiefs Trading For Washington Commanders Star Jonathan Allen To Replace Chris Jones
The Chiefs are reaching an impasse when it comes to their superstar defensive linemen.
Their options? Pay him the approximate $30 million per year that he’s projected to make, franchise tag and trade him, or allow him to walk in NFL free agency. If either of the latter two scenarios occur, Kansas City will have to replace Jones as well.
Defensive tackle is an area of need with the game-wrecker on the roster. It becomes a gaping hole in Steve Spagnuolo’s unit without him.
Bleacher Report recently suggested a “shocking” trade proposal with the Washington Commanders aimed at replacing Jones in 2024 — should he leave KC via trade or signing. Below were the details:
- Chiefs get DT Jonathan Allen.
- Commanders get 2024 second-round pick & 2025 third-round pick.
Keep in mind, this deal would likely occur after a tag and trade of Jones, giving the Chiefs much more draft capital to work with.
Here’s what the Bleacher Report piece said about the potential trade. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently suggested Jonathan Allen is the most likely player to be traded this offseason and the Commanders’ captain has been vocal about his frustration playing in Washington.
Will Allen Produce As Well As He Did In His Best Season For The Washington Commanders?
While Allen isn’t as dominant as Jones, the Washington Commanders DL is one of the top players at his position in the NFL. The 28-year-old former first rounder out of Alabama had a career year in 2021.
That season, he accumulated 67 quarterback pressures, 9.0 sacks, 10 tackles for a loss and 32 key defensive stops according to Pro Football Focus. The following year in 2022, he was even better as a run defender with 16 tackles for a loss and 43 key defensive stops.
The Commanders extended Allen on a four-year deal worth $18 million per year in 2021. He is currently under contract through the 2025 campaign, with cap hits of $21.5 and $23 million over the next two seasons.
