The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiving group has been largely disappointing this 2023, and it’s an area they could look to address in the 2024 offseason. If GM Brett Veach and the front office decide to look at the free agent market to improve the position, however, they could go for Chicago Bears wideout Darnell Mooney.
Mooney, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2024, could be a low-cost pickup for a Chiefs team that hasn’t been know to spend on wideouts, according to a free agency suggestion made by Bleacher Report.
While Mooney has regressed significantly as a wideout following his 1055-yard, four-touchdown campaign in 2021, it is worth noting that he is just 26 years old and has every opportunity to recapture that old form that has once made him one of the most promising young receivers in the league.
Through Week 16 this 2023, Mooney has already tallied 31 receptions for 414 receiving yards and one touchdown. Considering the limited opportunities he has gotten in Chicago, getting into a new environment and joining a pass-heavy attack could revitalize his career.
Sure, the Chiefs have other better options compared to Mooney, but considering that such options would come with a price, Mooney appears to be the best choice for them.
“The Chiefs could take a swing a top free-agent receiver like Mike Evans or Tee Higgins this offseason. However, they’ve been committed to not spending big money on receivers. They even traded away Tyreek Hill rather than pay him a top-of-the-market contract,” the BR article explained.
“If that’s still their approach, then targeting a buy-low candidate like Mooney would make sense. The speedster had a 1,000-yard season in 2021, but he has been phased out of Chicago’s offense since.”
A Darnell Mooney and Kansas City Chiefs partnership certainly look intriguing. If Kansas City could land him, Patrick Mahomes is definitely more than capable of working his magic with the wideout.
Of course it’s unknown if the Chiefs will actually make a move for Mooney, but it’s something worth keeping an eye on.
Aside from Darnell Mooney, Kansas City Chiefs Could Upgrade via Draft
The free agent market, where the Kansas City Chiefs could target Darnell Mooney, isn’t the team’s only option to address their receiving woes.
As reported previously, there is a possibility that the Chiefs trade up in the 2024 NFL Draft in order to land one of the more promising wide receivers in the upcoming rookie class.
“They did find value by trading up in the second round and taking Rashee Rice, who trails only Puka Nacua and Sam LaPorta in receptions among rookies and has seven touchdowns and 754 yards. Look for the Chiefs to try to draft a top receiver this April,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic wrote in her report.
Considering the Chiefs’ offensive struggles, don’t be too surprised if the team does make multiple additions to their wide receiving corps.
