According to The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, the framework for a trade between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tennessee Titans, with cornerback L’Jarius Sneed as the centerpiece, was in place last week.
The trade never happened, though. The Titans couldn’t sign off on it because of the final major hurdle: agreeing to a multiyear contract with Sneed, on whom the Chiefs placed the non-exclusive franchise tag earlier this month.
Sneed does not want to play on a franchise tag. He is looking at a three—to four-year deal that would make him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL.

Kansas City Cornerback
Sneed played a key role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run this past season. Some would say that Sneed and defensive tackle Chris Jones’s play was the main reason their defense was in the top three all season long.
Sneed boldly commented about what he is looking for from Kansas City ownership on the Kay Adams show.
Sneed Career
Sneed originally entered the NFL as the Kansas City Chiefs’ fourth-round pick (138th overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has over 300 tackles in his career and ten interceptions. Since entering the league in 2020, Sneed has recorded 6.5 sacks for a loss of 71.0 yards. His 6.5 sacks rank first in the NFL amongst cornerbacks and fifth amongst all defensive backs during that time.
Sneed, a four-year veteran, was one of the Chiefs’ best defenders last season. Starting in 16 games, he had two interceptions, 14 pass breakups, and didn’t allow a touchdown in coverage.
Sneed is set to play the 2024 season on a one-year franchise tag with a salary of $19.8 million. If he is traded, the team that acquires him will understand that he wants a contract extension that would pay him an average annual salary of at least $20 million, which would make him the league’s third-highest-paid cornerback behind the Green Bay Packers’ Jaire Alexander ($21 million) and the Cleveland Browns’ Denzel Ward ($20.1 million).
