This takes place one day after Kansas City GM Brett Veach spoke about the contract situations the Chiefs are in with multiple top players.
Brett Veach on Contracts
Brett Veach gave signals that this would happen soon. The goal is still for long-term deals, but this now allows for fewer options for Sneed to move on.
“We do have one tag, and I anticipate probably using it to help us. But I think our goal is to try to get both those players done and then work down the rest of our roster.”

Brett Veach also spoke on his ability to sign both L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones back with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“If you get close in negotiations, I think you get the added benefit of the ties going to the Chiefs,” Veach said, indicating he has been told by both players their preference is to remain with the Chiefs. “It is a money deal at the end of the day, and people aren’t going to turn down a huge discrepancy in contracts, but I think we benefit from breaking all ties.” they’ll see what happens with Sneed afterward.(According to ESPN).
Kansas City Defensive Decisions
This update means they will not use a franchise tag on All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones. Sneed and Jones are working on long-term deals for the defending Super Bowl Champions. Franchising Sneed over Jones allows more options for the Chiefs moving forward.
“The Chiefs also know Sneed will be easier to retain — or trade away — by using the franchise tag on him rather than pass rusher Chris Jones, the team’s best defender.” According to the Athletic
What Sneed Means to Kansas City
L’Jarius Sneed was one of the top defenders for the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs. He also knows what he may mean to other teams.
“Sneed knows he’s the Chiefs’ most fascinating potential free agent. A former fourth-round pick, Sneed had the best season of his career. In the regular season, he finished with two interceptions, 14 pass breakups and didn’t allow a touchdown while in coverage.”
When the Chiefs place the franchise tag on Sneed before the 3 p.m. CT March 5 deadline, he will be set to play the 2024 season on a one-year salary of $19.8 million — unless he and the team agree to an extension before the league’s July deadline for franchise-tagged players. The team could also trade Sneed ahead of the draft.
