Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo played an undeniably crucial role in the team’s recent Super Bowl conquest. In fact, one might even go as far as saying that the Chiefs would not have won three titles in the last four years had it not been for the 64-year-old coach.
In a recent interview, Spagnuolo confessed that he still dreams of one day becoming a head coach in the NFL again, which might lead to some fans worrying about his future in Kansas City.
Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo Makes Honest Admission
Spagnuolo has been around for quite a bit now. He started his NFL coaching career as a defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles back in 1999. He has since had stints with the New York Giants (twice), the New Orleans Saints, and the Baltimore Ravens.
Between 2009 and 2011, Spagnuolo served as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams. As it turns out, this is a role that Spagnuolo still dreams about after all these years:
“I’ve been asked this question a lot, I’ll answer it the same way,” Spagnuolo said, via Josh Alper of PFT. “Absolutely would want to. We’re prideful guys in this business. It wasn’t a success when I was in St. Louis, although I think what gets lost in this is when we went from Year One to Year Two, in that second year in 2010, had we won the last game of the season we’re in the playoffs and hosting a playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. It didn’t happen, then we hit the lockout and things didn’t go well and we were gone. The answer to the question is yes, but I always follow up with this. If it never happens and it’s God’s will that I continue to do what I’m doing, I’m a blessed man.”
It is clear that Spagnuolo loves his role with Kansas City. He’s been with the team for five seasons now, and he’s done a tremendous job throughout this time.
What is also clear, however, is that Spagnuolo remains open to the opportunity of taking on a head coaching spot if it becomes available.
Will Spagnuolo Chase His Dream Elsewhere?
Spagnuolo may have been a candidate for the HC role in Kansas City if Andy Reid decided to call time on his career. As it turns out, however, Reid isn’t even thinking about retirement just yet.
This only means that the head coaching gig with the Chiefs might not be available for at least the next couple of years. If Spagnuolo is serious about pursuing his dream of becoming a head coach again, then he might need to do it elsewhere.
It doesn’t seem like he’s actively looking for a promotion, but that does not mean that he won’t jump on the opportunity if an offer comes.
