The New England Patriots will be looking extremely different for this season, and while they are still trying to make many moves to add more talent to the roster ahead of this season, on Monday they cut a rookie linebacker. This will now open a roster spot, which could be to promote from within, or for trade.
New England Patriots Open Roster Spot By Cutting Rookie
The team announced the release of Jontrey Hunter on Monday. He was signed as an undrafted free agent after playing at Georgia State for his entire college career. While Hunter was very productive in college, the team may be opening a roster spot for a bigger move ahead of the season.
Hinter totaled 234 tackles, six sacks, seven forced fumbles, and three interceptions in 53 career games in his college career. After the 2024 Senior Bowl, Hunter did not hear his name come draft time. He signed with the team in May but will sadly not make it training camp.
In addition to Hunter, who was placed on the non football injury list, another rookie, Terrell Jennings is on the unable to perform list. Jennings is very close to joining Hunter.
The Patriots will start camp this Wednesday, following their lowest winning season in decades. To be specific, last season was their worst in the 21st century. The long time winning franchise will be under new leadership with Jerod Mayo. With Mayo comes a whole new era for the team, players, and fans.
It will take time for the entire NFL world to get used to not seeing the legend Bill Belichick at the helm for New England. Belichick led the team to 18 postseasons in his 24 seasons as head coach, however the team felt it was time to go in a different direction after numerous failed attempts at a rebuild after losing Tom Brady. The team went 29-38 in four seasons since Brady left, and it was time for a new voice and a new era in New England.
Fans will get their first look at who they are hoping is the future of the team in Drake Maye this week. The team is hoping that he will be the long term answer at the most important position in sports. On the other side of the ball, Mayo will look to pick up right where the team left off last year as they were ranked No. 7 in yards allowed and were one of the best defenses in the league.
Step by step, the team will look to build a champion again, and it will at start this Wednesday.
