The Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the world, or so it would seem. They have won back-to-back Super Bowls, have the best coach in the league, and one of their top players is dating arguably the most famous singer of this generation. Yet, according to the players, they are unhappy.
There is a phrase that says that money can’t buy happiness. While winning and a Super Bowl may not be exactly the same, one would assume that winning the Super Bowl would feel like a million bucks (or $100 million since most of the players literally do have millions already), yet according to the NFL report cards, the Chiefs ranked amongst the worst workplaces by their own players.
Kansas City Chiefs Report Card
1,706 players were asked to give a report card on how they felt regarding many different areas, including coach job performance, investments into facilities, and overall feel. While the idea is for players to feel this out while not considering their win/loss record, anyone who has ever lost/won in something knows that little issues can often be overlooked or ignored while winning. On the flip side, phenominal amenities can feel just average while losing, so it makes the survey at least a little bit flawed.
Yet it wasn’t enough for the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs scored the following grades in these categories:
- Treatment of Families (D+)
- Training Room (D)
- Travel Accomidations (D)
- Nutrition (F)
- Locker Room (F)
- Training Staff (F)
- Ownership (F-)
Why the Low Grades
The answers of each individual player were anonymous, so unless a player is willing to come out and essentially blast the team, it is unlikely there will be specific reasons given for why the Chiefs scored so incredibly low in so many areas.
Some do point to the fact that the Chiefs did not get a lockerroom upgrade despite winning the 2022 Super Bowl and that even with all the press and additional money coming through ad revenue, owner Clark Hunt is keeping all of the money for himself and not investing it back into the team.
Again, this is all speculative, but there have been reports that have come out in the past before these results that have pointed to this.
Chiefs at a Boiling Point
Again, winning can do a lot to fix how players feel towards ownership, each other, and the organization as a whole, which makes the grades by the Chiefs’ players that much more surprising. With so many low scores, one has to wonder what would happen to the team and the players if they struggled in 2024. It seems possible, and even likely, that if this happens, there could be a breaking point between the players and ownership that could make things ugly quickly. It’s one thing to play for bad management while winning, it’s entirely different to do so while losing.
As a side note, the players do seem to love Andy Reid. He finished first in the league in being te No. 1 coach and the Dolphins were ranked as the best team overall to play for.
