Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is not really one to seek out the spotlight. While one of his best friends and teammates Travis Kelce embraces their increased popularity, Mahomes has not really changed his public demeanor or persona.

That is the way it has always been, though. When Mahomes first exploded onto the scene throwing 50 touchdown passes in his first season as the Chiefs starter, his brother and fiancé (now his wife) often made headlines and went viral for their social media posts and videos, some of which created controversy (like the time Jackson danced on Washington Commanders legend Sean Taylor’s memorial).

Less than two weeks after Mahomes won his third Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP, his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., made some unfortunate headlines of his own.

The elder Mahomes was pulled over and arrested for driving while intoxicated in Tyler, Texas. According to a report by KCTV, “Mahomes, 54, was arrested on Feb. 24 after a traffic stop resulted in him submitting blood with an alcohol content of 0.23. On Aug. 27, he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and agreed to a five-year probation sentence in Judge Kerry L. Russell’s court. On Monday, the sentence was made official in the same court.”

As one can see in the portion of the report quoted above, Mahomes Sr. has been sentenced to five years of probation. In addition, his driver’s license has been suspended for one year, he will have “intense supervision” for the first year of his probation, and he must attend AA meetings.

When he is able to drive again, Mahomes Sr. will need to have a breathalyzer ignition device.

He is not sure if he will be able to continue traveling to watch his son and the Chiefs during his probation. The elder Mahomes is typically at every game, both home and away.

“It’s kind of a tradition; I normally go to all the football games. I know he enjoys me being there, so hopefully things will work out and I’ll be able to continue what I’ve been doing,” Mahomes said according to KCTV.
