On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs reset the tight end market with the 2024 NFL draft officially in the rearview mirror. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Kansas City and superstar tight end Travis Kelce agreed to a two-year contract extension, making the 34-year-old the highest-paid at his position.
Kelce, a significant contributor to the top-ranked Chiefs offense since 2013, earned his ninth straight Pro Bowl nod last season. His quarterback since 2018, Patrick Mahomes, took to Twitter, also known as X, to celebrate Kelce’s extension with the club.
Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes: Congratulates Travis Kelce on Extension
News of Travis Kelce’s extension with the Kansas City Chiefs started making rounds late Monday morning. In less than ten minutes, Kansas City’s star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was on social media, expressing his pleasure and congratulating Kelce. His excitement for his teammate and friend’s extension to stay with the Chiefs was noticeable.
“I told y’all I’ll never let him leave!! Congrats, my guy!” said Mahomes on his personal Twitter account. Mahomes gained over one million views in less than an hour of posting.
Fresh off a down statistical season, Mahomes helped lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win last season, their third in five years. Kansas City made it their mission this offseason to bolster the group of pass-catchers around their franchise signal-caller, including selecting former Texas speedster and wideout Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Additionally, they added former 1,000-yard receiver Marquise Brown via free agency.
Chiefs: Mahomes-Kelce Duo by the Numbers
The Kansas City Chiefs have been well off with the dynamic aerial attack of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. Mahomes, a two-time MVP, has led the NFL in passing touchdowns twice in his six seasons as a starter. He also led the league in passing yards in 2022 with 5,290. Meanwhile, Kelce has posted a Hall of Fame resume during his 11-year pro career. From 2016 to 2022, Kelce made at least the first or second All-Pro team.
Mahomes and Kelce have also set NFL marks together. Last season, the duo passed Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski for the most postseason touchdowns by a combination in playoff history.
