The Kansas City Chiefs are just one day away from potentially winning their third Super Bowl in five years. Many fans and analysts predicted the team would have a down year due to the lack of weapons quarterback Patrick Mahomes has in his arsenal. While the Chiefs could use some more weapons on offense, the team looks like they will be aiming to do so in the offseason after a report came out regarding Mahomes possibly taking a pay cut.
Kansas City Chiefs Plan To Restructure Mahomes Contract
According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones, Kansas City is planning to restructure Mahomes contract to lower his cap hit. The quarterback’s cap hits for the next four seasons are $57.3 million, $60.8 million, $63.2 million, and $59.4 million. While the quarterback’s contract plays a big part in the lack of weapons on the offensive side of the ball, the Chiefs have still found ways to win this season and make it to the big game once again.

Mahomes has one of the most unique contracts in the league as far as numbers go, while also being team-friendly. In 2020, he signed a massive contract for a 10-year, $450 million extension, but also guarantees less money than a typical quarterback deal. Both Mahomes and the Chiefs organization have been working on restructuring this contract for several months, which was reportedly part of the original plan immediately after signing the huge deal.
More On the Contract
The contract is built to be restructured every few years as long as the quarterback continues to play at the level he has his entire starting career, as well as paying him an extra $1.25 million each year that he is crowned the Most Valuable Player in the league. As long as he can keep up his level of play, the Chiefs could rework his deal yet again after the 2026 season.
Could Kansas City Be Targeting A Receiver In Free Agency?
Lowering the cap hit for the quarterback could give the organization more options when it comes to pursuing offensive weapons, especially in free agency. Big-named receivers like Davante Adams and Justin Jefferson, who are set to potentially hit the open market this offseason would likely be out of the pay range for Kansas City, but they could go after names like Tee Higgins and Mike Williams to bolster the offense. Do you think that the Chiefs will sign a playmaker for Mahomes this offseason after restructuring his contract?
