One of the biggest weaknesses for the Kansas City Chiefs during their improbable Super Bowl run last season was their wide receiver unit. With Travis Kelce already getting up there in age, Patrick Mahomes needs another target that can put additional pressure on opposing secondaries.
They seem to have finally found their man after taking Marquise Brown off the free-agent market yesterday. He’s proven himself to be a capable wideout despite his most recent performances saying otherwise.
However, one analyst argues that all Hollywood Brown needs to thrive like the wide receiver that made him famous around the league is a signal-caller like Mahomes.
Marquise Brown can be revived by the Kansas City Chiefs
It’s fair to say that Marquise Brown hasn’t showcased the elite ability that made the Arizona Cardinals trade for him in 2022. In his final season with the team, he only caught 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns.
However, Bill Barnwell reminded everyone that Brown was an extremely effective QB the last time he played with an elite QB like Lamar Jackson:
Last time Hollywood Brown was healthy, his QB was healthy, and he was in a pass-friendly offense was Weeks 1-6, 2022
His pro-rated line from that stretch: 122 catches, 1,374 yards, 8 TD

Based on what he says, it’s not hard to imagine Mahomes being able to bring Brown’s reputation back to what it was during his final year with the Baltimore Ravens.
He will be joining a team where there is no solid WR2. He can easily slot behind Rashee Rice and provide a myriad of options for Mahomes to throw to.
Is a capable QB really all that Marquise Brown needs?
It’s easy to argue that all Hollywood Brown needs to be successful is a QB. Any wideout can thrive if they have a future Hall of Famer in Mahomes leading the charge.
However, Mahomes’ prestige isn’t the only factor dictating whether Brown will thrive with the team. There is a gulf in abilities between Mahomes and Kyler Murray at the moment.
While it’s undeniable that Murray is a talented NFL field general, no one in their right mind would argue that he is a better QB than the three-time Super Bowl champ who hasn’t even hit his thirties yet.
Kansas City Chiefs fans should expect Brown to bring out his A-game now that there’s a capable quarterback who can throw darts his way.
