The Kansas City Chiefs are arguably the team that least needs a preseason. That is because they have won the Super Bowl the last two years. Now, the Chiefs are going for a historic three-peat.

As a result, a debate has formed as to whether star players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce should play at all in the preseason. Kansas City has its second preseason game on Saturday against the Detroit Lions. This is typically the game the starters see the most playing time before the regular season.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid revealed what his plans for Saturday’s game are. Read below to find out more.

According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid plans to play his starters in Saturday’s preseason game for the entire first half. This includes star players such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Andy Reid tends to be a head coach who believes in playing his starters in the preseason. So, today’s announcement is consistent with that philosophy along with the actions Reid took in last week’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That preseason game against the Jaguars was the Chiefs’ first of the season. Because of this, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce saw minimal playing time.

Mahomes attempted four passes in that game. He completed three of them for a total of 27 passing yards. As for Kelce, he had one catch in last week’s preseason game for seven yards. Now, it is safe to say both of them will put up bigger numbers in this upcoming game against the Lions.

    Kansas City Chiefs Moving Forward

Ultimately, the goal is to win a third consecutive Super Bowl for the Chiefs. Travis Kelce in particular has not been shy about that being his reasoning to delay retirement. If the Chiefs were to win the Super Bowl this season, they would become the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl in three straight seasons.

However, the Chiefs need to be careful when it comes to managing starters in preseason games. That is because newly acquired WR Hollywood Brown suffered a shoulder injury last week and is now expected to miss at least one month. Hopefully, no other significant players go down for the Chiefs.
