The Kansas City Chiefs have been in the headlines all offseason, but not for reasons one might expect from the back-to-back Super Bowl Champions. Of course, wide receiver Rashee Rice has been in the news a great deal due to his multiple legal issues. He is facing a lengthy suspension from the NFL in response to the felony charges he is facing regarding his high-speed car accident, an incident which saw him leaving the scene before police arrived.
Recently, defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was arrested and charged with two counts of animal cruelty. Buggs allegedly left two dogs an one of his properties without any food or water. The Chiefs’ defensive lineman has denied the allegations, claiming the dogs are not his and he did not know they were there.
Perhaps the most polarizing Chiefs player this offseason, though, has been kicker Harrison Butker. A few weeks ago, he went viral on all social media platforms with his controversial comments during a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic school.
Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Called Pride Month a “Deadly Sin”

During his graduation speech, Butker made several comments that reflected his views as a ultra-conservative Catholic, and follower of a movement called the Traditional Latin Mass. This movement is in direct conflict with the Pope and other high Church leaders, who they believe are too progressive and accepting of lifestyles different from their traditional view.
Many of the things Butker said were direct attacks on what are now social norms, such as women having careers and finding fulfillment outside the role of “homemaker.” He also, though, found ways to sneak in attacks on other groups of people without spending too much time expanding on what he said. Such was the case with his comments about the LGBTQ+ community.
He said, “I am certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn’t be met with anger, but instead met with excitement and pride. Not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify him.”
The next few minutes of his speech were spent praising various local Catholic leaders before going into his statements about women.

While much of the conversations surrounding Butker’s speech has been focused on what he said about women, there are still numerous posts being made about his quick jab at the LGBTQ+ community.
Harrison Butker flips his calendar to June, realizes it’s Pride (the deadly sin sort) Month and immediately faints onto this fainting couch.
