The Kansas City Chiefs found a temporary solution to end Chris Jones’ holdout that lasted during the preseason and in the first game of 2023, signing him to a new one-year deal filled with multiple incentives. However, with the offseason coming soon, the team will have to decide what the future holds for the All-Pro defensive tackle.
A solution for the Chiefs could come by way of a trade, though, with the Washington Commanders a potential partner. Washington DT Jonathan Allen could reportedly be on the move this offseason amid his growing frustrations on the team’s rebuild (per ESPN), and it could be the chance for Kansas City to quickly fill Jones’ role should he end up leaving.
With that said, Alex Ballentine came up with a trade proposal that would send Allen to the Chiefs, while the Commanders receive some much needed draft assets that should help in their rebuild.
In his proposal, Ballentine suggested for the Chiefs to send a 2024 second-round pick and 2025 third-round pick for the two-time Pro Bowler.
Why Should the Kansas City Chiefs Do the Jonathan Allen Trade With Washington Commanders?
While Chris Jones is the better player numbers wise, Jonathan Allen comes close and could very well be a fine replacement.
As Ballentine noted, “Allen is 16th among all defensive tackles in pass rush win rate while drawing double teams on 65 percent of his snaps. Jones is ninth in pass-rush win rate while drawing one of the top double-team rates at 72 percent.”
It should also help the Kansas City Chiefs that Allen is looking for a team where he can compete and not be part of a rebuild. With Patrick Mahomes leading the way, Allen has every chance to fight for as Super Bowl title year in and year out.
Not to mention that Allen still has three years left in his contract, which should give the Chiefs stability on the position.
As to why the Commanders would do it, they have already signaled that they are rebuilding by trading away Chase Young and Montez Sweat at the deadline. They’ll certainly benefit more by adding assets to hasten their rebuild rather than keep an aging star that won’t be part of their future.
It remains to be seen if the Chiefs will actually consider the said mock trade, but it’s definitely something worth looking at when the offseason begins.
