As the Kansas City Chiefs attempt to make their third-straight Super Bowl game in 2024, they are busy with keeping as many of their key players on reasonable deals as they can.
While they know they wouldn’t be able to keep everyone with the team, securing the services of the likes of Chris Jones is vital to the team’s overall performance on the defensive side of the ball.
He was a key contributor to the team’s stellar defensive performance in 2023, and securing his services for the foreseeable future would extend their championship window even further.
With this in mind, they’re doing everything they can to keep him from entering free agency once the season resets. Fortunately for the Chiefs Kingdom, there’s a recent update that provides an encouraging picture of Chris Jones’ future with the team.
Kansas City Chiefs confident of bagging Chris Jones to new contract
The Spun’s Kameron Duncan wrote about the update on Jones’ contract status with the team. They don’t want to have another round of contract drama with the defensive tackle, so they’re reportedly doing everything they could to sign him to a long-term deal:
The Chiefs are risking a repeat of last year’s contract saga with Jones, where they weren’t able to sign him to a long-term deal.
This time around, the Chiefs appear to be in a much better position to get Jones locked down for a longer period of time.
According to The Athletic, there is “growing optimism” that they will be able to re-sign Jones, who is an unrestricted free agent.
The team’s plan to give L’Jarius Sneed the franchise tag should provide the team with enough cap space to keep the 29-year-old on a long-term deal. While Sneed’s future will still have to be figured out in the next offseason, it will at least give the team the same defensive spine that helped them limit the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
Jones was a key cog in the Kansas City Chiefs’ surprisingly elite defense in 2023. He completed 10.5 sacks, 20 solo tackles, and four pass deflections through 16 regular-season starts.
