The Buffalo Bills have made plenty of noise about NFL officials since their 32-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
The Buffalo Bills didn’t think some calls were fair
General manager Brandon Beane thought the league’s officiating slanted toward the Chiefs in a couple of key plays at Arrowhead Stadium.
“It’s frustrating,” Beane said of the calls that went the Chiefs’ way, via Sports Illustrated. “There’s only so much I can say. We work with the league to try to get clarity. I’ll give them credit. They’ve taken our calls. They’ve sent video and things like that. If you’re talking about like the fourth-down play, I feel like he got that. I still feel like he got that. I felt that in the moment and nothing has changed my mind on that.”
Bills head coach Sean McDermott told his team before the game that they needed to be prepared not to get favorable calls against the Chiefs.
However, the league did fine Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce for taunting Damar Hamlin following Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown run. Hamlin took Mahomes down to the ground in the end zone. Kelce got in his face and started talking aggressively to the Bills’ safety.
For his sins, Kelce was fined $11,255.
Jordan Phillips was fined
Bills defensive tackle Jordan Phillips didn’t care to see Kelce in Hamlin’s face. He slammed his helmet into Kelce’s facemask, prompting the league to fine him as well, per Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.
“Chiefs TE Travis Kelce was fined $11,255 for taunting on this play in the AFC Championship,” wrote Getzenberg. “Bills DT Jordan Phillips was fined $6,722 for unnecessary roughness (use of helmet),”

The league wasn’t playing favorites when it came to fines. Phillips’ fine was nearly $5,000 less than what Kelce will have to fork over.
Of course, Kelce will gladly take a heftier fine and a victory in the AFC Championship.
