Jon Gruden’s very public exit from the NFL in 2021 came after inappropriate emails he sent to coworkers went public. He now returns to professional football but in a much different capacity.
Coach Jon Gruden has returned to professional football three years after resigning from the Las Vegas Raiders. The European League of Football (ELF) announced Monday that the Milano Seamen of the ELF have retained Gruden as an advisor.
“We’re excited to announce that American football legend Jon Gruden will work with us as (an) advisor,” the Seamen wrote on social media. “Gruden will help us to improve our organization in every aspect. He already started to work with our coaching staff.”
Jon Gruden said Goodbye to the NFL.
On October 11th, 2021, Jon Gruden resigned from his position as head coach and said goodbye to the NFL and the Las Vegas Raiders.
ESPN reported that Jon Gruden has resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders following reports that emails he wrote over ten years included racist, misogynistic, and anti-gay language. He later released a statement:
“I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction,” Gruden said in a statement Monday night. “Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”
The resignation came shortly after The New York Times reported that Gruden used misogynistic and anti-gay language in numerous emails over seven years. That report came days after 10-year-old emails from Gruden surfaced that included a racist comment about NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith as well as a vulgar criticism of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Gruden has not worked formally in football since 2021.
European Football League
Sports Illustrated stated that the European League of Football was established in 2020. It is a 17-team circuit with teams in nine nations across continental Europe.
The league site reports, “Gruden isn’t the only Super Bowl-winning head coach involved in the ELF. Another one is Gary Kubiak. The three-time Super Bowl winner has been an advisor to the Panthers Wroclaw and has been in close contact with the team since 2022.”
Could this be a part of Gruden’s rebuilding tour for his image among NFL executives? We shall wait and see.
