NFL Fans React To Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow Hinting At Possible Early Retirement Due To Injuries

NFL fans reacted strongly on social media following Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s statement on his “football mortality” as he rehabs from another injury. Burrow is rehabbing from torn ligaments in his right (throwing) wrist.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow practices during an offseason workout at the practice fields outside of Paycor Stadium Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Burrow is recovering from wrist surgery after a season-ending injury he suffered in a Week 11.

Burrow has dealt with numerous severe injuries since his college career. He’s missed substantial time with the Bengals. As previously discussed on GH, Burrow said he has questioned how long he can keep playing football as the injuries pile up:

“Whenever the injuries start to stack up, your football mortality kind of comes into the back of your mind,” Burrow said following mandatory minicamp practice. “So that’s definitely something I’ve thought about and something I have had to fight through.”

Burrow said he’s “built” for the challenge of overcoming his injuries. However, he said it is a challenge when the injuries “stack” up, and he’s forced to take fewer practice reps than he’d like in order for him to be the best version of himself.

Burrow said there’s a mental toll to the injuries:

“You always forget how hard it is coming back from injury — that’s every time it happens,” Burrow said. “There’s always peaks where you’re like, ‘I’m feeling great,’ and then a couple of months later you have a couple of days where it’s like, ‘Man, I’m not feeling that great.’ In the past I pushed through that and caused problems for myself, and this year I’m not doing that.”

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (9) drops back to throw in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 1 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals at FirstEnergy Stadium in downtown Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023. The Browns dealt the Bengals a 24-3 loss to begin the season.

Burrow isn’t retiring this year. He made it clear he’s motivated to fight to get back to being an elite quarterback. However, Burrow candidly mentioned that he had thought about retirement.

Fans had mixed reactions to Burrow’s statement. Some don’t think he’ll retire any time soon, and some don’t want to believe he’d retire early. Others could see him taking his guaranteed money and going out early, like Andrew Luck.

I sadly am not surprised. I’m sorry, Joe. God has a different path for you. You have been BEAUTIFUL to watch & I’m a Proud Bengal Fan because of Joe. Joe, be happy and healthy. You’re a born leader to your friends and team. And you have that genuine sweet shyness much like my son. God bless you, your family and the Cincinnati Bengals. Stay humble😉.

The Bengals×@ Ownership is to blame, they have not put an emphasis on Fielding the Best Pass Blocking Offensive Line to protect their Franchise Quarterback!!!,and as a result Joe has taken way to many QB hits in his short stint in the league!!!,Way to many hits for a QB of his Caliber!!!!, So I blame the Coaches and the Front Office for their total lack of All Pro Talent on the Offensive Line!!!!, it’s unacceptable when you have a Talent like Joe Burrow, not to have an All Pro Wall around him!!!!

You are so right!! I hate to see him do this but totally understand! Loved watching him throw that football at LSU & then with the Bengals. And is such a role model for kids coming up and those that are playing football.
    He is the best !!

I’m going to say if he’s suffers. Another injury this season. That could side line him. It would not surprise me if He doesn’t contemplate retirement. For the sake of his health .
